Second Annual Jeffrey A. Johnson Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Building Energy Codes and Performance Winner Announced!
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is pleased to announce the second recipient of the Jeffrey A. Johnson Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Building Energy Codes and Performance. John Hogan, Seattle Department of Planning and Development, was presented with the award during a plenary session on July 25, 2007 at Energy Codes 2007 in Pittsburgh, PA. The award recognizes a leader or team in the United States for sustained service of the highest caliber in the pursuit of energy efficiency goals.

John Hogan, PE, AIA
Mr. Hogan is a Senior Code Development Analyst and has been working with the City of Seattle in energy codes for 25 to 30 years. He has been involved with ASHRAE Standard 90.1 for approximately 15 years, and is the former chair of Envelope Subcommittee of ASHRAE SSPC 90.1. He is currently the Chair of ASHRAE SPC 189, Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

Jeffrey A. Johnson Award
The award was established in 2006 in honor of Jeff Johnson, a leader in Building Energy Codes and Performance, who died in a mountain biking accident on May 15, 2005. Jeff was an enthusiastic, motivated visionary who made significant impacts in the field of building energy codes and performance throughout his career at the California Energy Commission, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and as Executive Director of New Buildings Institute.
Representatives from the US DOE, Building Energy Codes Program, the New Buildings Institute, the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership (NEEP), the California Energy Commission and the building codes industry participated in establishing the criteria and selecting the award recipient.
In their comments.....
- John has played a critical role in developing progressive building energy codes in the City of Seattle over the last two decades.
- Exceptional technical work which has been demonstrated consistently over the years with John's work with ASHRAE, NFRC and the ICC.
- John has done an incredible job working in innumerable forums. He has had a direct, personal, and influential impact on California's building energy efficiency standards. He has actively worked on ASHRAE 90.1 and 90.2.
- John has a lead role on the IECC committee considering important changes to that code - this is a role that most efficiency advocates could not possibly have because you have to be in the building official community to be there; John was able to wear his two hats (efficiency advocate and building official)
- Recently, John has been very visible in taking us all in the direction of a new generation of energy efficiency standards, through his chairmanship of ASHRAE 189 - how did he get so much accomplished so fast on that front? John is unique - I know no other building official who comes close to having as much expertise and passion as John about energy efficiency codes.
- John is particularly strong in the area of impacts (energy savings) as much of his work has had national results.
Congratulations to John Hogan!
A Seattle Department of Planning and Development Press Release reflecting the announcement above was recently made available.
