Jeffrey A. Johnson Award – Seattle Department of Planning and Development Press Release
Local and National Energy Guru Receives Award
The Jeffrey A. Johnson Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Building Energy Codes and Performance was awarded on July 25, 2007 to DPD's Senior Code Development Analyst - John Hogan.
The award is named after Jeff Johnson, an avid bicyclist who was passionate about energy efficient buildings. Jeff pursued life with a can-do, no-fear attitude for making a difference. In the mid-to-late 90s, Jeff took a leading role in the development of a new commercial energy code and creating Advanced Buildings™ as a source of technical information for improved building design and use.
The criteria for receiving this prestigious award were developed by a committee representing the U.S. Department of Energy's Building Energy Code Program, the New Buildings Institute, the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership and representatives from the building industry. The award criteria require a sustained collaboration with stakeholders in the development of energy codes that deliver high efficiency. The recipient must have demonstrated a passionate drive for innovation and a willingness to solve problems or address specific needs in a way that inspires others to reach for new heights.
Like Jeff, John Hogan with a can-do, no-fear attitude has dared to push for codes that propel market trends by continuing to raise the bar on efficiency. John has done this by driving hard for consensus in the details and pushing for the necessary constituent buy-in. As a result, John is praised by the award committee for being unique in his ability to take "us all in the direction of a new generation of energy efficiency standards."
John Hogan has been working for the City of Seattle twenty-five years and has invested over fifteen years in working with ASHRAE 90.1. John has demonstrated leadership, passion and talent in his pursuit of improved energy efficiency by chairing or serving on committees in numerous organizations such as ICC, NFRC, and ASHRAE.
Other comments by the awards committee include:
- John has played a critical role in developing progressive building energy codes in the City of Seattle over the last two decades.
- John is particularly strong in the area of impacts (energy savings) as much of his work has had national results.
- Exceptional technical work which has been demonstrated consistently over the years with John's work with ASHRAE, NFRC and the ICC.
- John has a lead role on the IECC committee considering important changes to that code.
- John has been very visible in taking us all in the direction of a new generation of energy efficiency standards, through his chairmanship of ASHRAE 189 - how did he get so much accomplished so fast on that front? and
- John has done an incredible job working in innumerable forums. He has had a direct, personal, and influential impact on California's building energy efficiency standards. He has actively worked on ASHRAE 90.1 and 90.2.
Congratulations, John!
