Windows Deserve a Clear Look
Look for the U-factor on the NFRC label on new windows. Where winters are severe, lower numbers are better.
Windows should have at least two panes of glass or storm windows should be installed.
"Low E" and "gas filled" windows are designed to save energy.
In Southern Climates look for:
- Windows with a low solar heat gain coefficient (.4 or less), they help keep the heat out in the summer.
- Trees and other vegetation to shade the house.
- Overhangs or screens on windows.
- Limited east and especially west facing windows.
