Electrical Power and Lighting

Separate meters are required for each unit in a multifamily building (three or more dwelling units). Many builders already install individual meters on each multifamily unit. If occupants can see how much energy they use, they may be willing to change some habits. However, this requirement doesn't require that individual units be billed separately.
There are no requirements for lighting in the 2000 IECC for Type A-1 (detached one- and two-family dwellings) residential buildings or the dwelling portions of Type A-2 (multifamily) buildings, three stories or less in height.
