ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Performance Rating Method (Appendix G) Building Performance Factor Calculation Tool

Document Type: Other
Publication Date:

This calculator can be used to develop a custom set of Building Performance Factors (BPFs) for use with the Performance Rating Method of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2016 though 2022 when approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction or Rating Authority. BPFs are calculated using metrics of energy cost, site energy, source energy, and greenhouse gas emissions following  the approach described in ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022 Informative Appendix I. The BPF values published in ASHRAE Standard 90.1 use energy cost, source energy and GHG emissions factors that are based on representative national average values. Jurisdictions can use this tool to better align BPF values with local values. Where a jurisdiction requires the use of hourly or other time of use data to calculate energy costs, emissions or source energy, calculate and enter values representing the annual blended or annual average values.

In addition to calculating BPFs analogous to those published in the various editions of the standard, the tool also calculates alternative BPFs using an updated approach described in he PNNL Technical Support Document titled, "Commercial Building Prototypes Based on ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2019 Appendix G PRM". The intent is that a jurisdiction or rating authority may choose to adopt BPFs using the updated approach, as the authors believe these to be more technically sound.

Commercial Building Prototypes Based on ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2019 Appendix G PRM

Document Number: PNNL-32815
Document Type: Technical Support Document
Publication Date:

This report (1) provides an overview of the Appendix G PRM and documents the use of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and U.S. Department of Energy commercial building prototypes to support the development of the Appendix G Performance Rating Method performance targets; (2) documents the historical development of building performance factors calculated using those models; (3) describes an updated approach to calculating building performance factors, which will lead to a more accurate assessment of the energy performance a proposed building design, (4) presents an updated set of building performance factors using the new approach for Standards 90.1-2019 and 90.1-2016 as well as proposed building performance factors for the 2022 Standard; (5) describes a methodology for creating building performance factors for metrics other than cost, such as source energy and carbon emissions.

Technical Support Document to Facilitate Adoption of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Performance Rating Method

Document Number: PNNL-35248
Document Type: Technical Support Document
Publication Date:

This report describes solutions to the common PRM adoption challenges, including calculating energy savings by fuel type and electricity demand savings relative to current code and avoiding “fuel switching” when reporting savings of the proposed design relative to the current code. The calculations described in this technical support document are automated in the ASHRAE Standard 90.1 Performance Based Compliance Form and the Compliance Form Companion Tool
